Yam (senai kizhangu) chops
Yam thin cubes 2 cups
Tamarind pulp 3 tsps
Salt to taste
Turmeric little
Boil the yam with all these till it's semi-soft. Drain the liquid. Keep little of the liquid.
For masala
Small onion 10 or big onion 1
Cinnamon 1 small piece
Cloves 4
Channa dal 1tsp
Red chilli 4-5
Coriander 1 tsp
Jeera 1 tsp
Fennel seeds 1tsp
Coconut 3 tsps
Curry leaves little
Oil
Salt to taste
In a pan add little oil and fry above ingredients together till they are golden brown. Cool. Grind to a paste.
Heat 2 tbps of oil in a pan. Add the ground masala, salt to taste ( adjust since we already added to the yam). And little of the liquid. Keep stirring till it cooks and become semi dry. Now add the cooked yam and mix well. Allow it to get dry. This is a spicy side dish. You can make with any yam.

Another way of doing it, by frying the cooked yam in oil and then adding to the masala.
